Welcome to McDowell County! We spent months exploring these mountains while restoring our 1928 character home. To help you get the absolute most out of your trip, here are our personal favorite sights, hidden histories, and local spots we love.
The Glade Creek Grist Mill: An absolute icon of West Virginia. It’s fully operational and incredibly scenic—a perfect day trip for a classic Appalachian photo.
The New River Gorge Bridge: Standing over one of the oldest rivers on the continent, this massive steel arch bridge is breathtaking to see in person. Great hiking trails and overlooks are nearby.
The Overlook Swing: Located up on East River Mountain Road near Bluefield (~50 mins from the house). Sit on the giant state swing, take in the endless mountain ridges, and snap a perfect "Almost Heaven" photo.
The Millionaire Coal Town: The entire town of Bramwell is on the National Register of Historic Places. Walking past the grand, preserved mansions of old 1910 coal barons makes you feel like you stepped back in time.
Cass Scenic Railroad State Park (Cass, ambition-level day trip)
Ride an authentic, 1901-era Shay steam locomotive up the mountain lines originally built to haul timber. The incredible ride to Bald Knob takes you to the second-highest point in West Virginia with panoramic mountain vistas. The historic logging town itself is beautifully preserved with a company store and museum. Note: Advanced online reservations are highly recommended as train excursions run seasonally from May through October.
Dolly Sods Wilderness (Monongahela National Forest)
A rocky, windswept high-altitude plateau that looks and feels like northern Canada. Famous for its rugged hiking trails, stunted red spruce trees, expansive blueberry patches, and massive boulder fields. It offers some of the most dramatic, unique landscape views in the eastern United States.
Cranberry Glades Botanical Area
West Virginia's largest bog system, perched at 3,360 feet in the mountains. A well-maintained, half-mile wheelchair-accessible wooden boardwalk lets you walk right over the spongy peat moss. Keep your eyes peeled for rare plant life, including wild orchids and native carnivorous (insect-eating) sundew plants. There is a great nature center nearby to stretch your legs.

Our Take: Brand new to town! We haven't had a chance to try it yet, but it's a great new addition to the local scene.

Kimball War Memorial (Kimball)
Where: 178 One Way St, Kimball, WV
What: A truly unique piece of American history right in town. This is the very first memorial ever built in the United States to honor African-American veterans of World War I.
Northfork High School "Basketball Capital" Signs
What: Keep an eye out for the signs along Route 52. They honor the legendary Northfork Blue Demons, who set an unbelievable national record by winning 8 consecutive state basketball titles from 1974 to 1981—the longest public high school streak in US history.
Coalwood Rocket Memorial (Coalwood)
Where: 1500 Frog Level Rd, Coalwood, WV (~30 mins away)
What: A great roadside detour along the Head of the Dragon loop. It’s a tribute to Homer Hickam and his friends, whose amateur rocket builds inspired the famous book Rocket Boys and the hit movie October Sky.
Pinnacle Rock State Park (Bramwell)
Where: 6470 Coal Heritage Rd, Bramwell, WV

Our property sits atop a classic West Virginia holler, which offers incredible views but means on-site parking is tight and unique. To ensure a smooth arrival, please review our strict vehicle guidelines:
The Carport Rule (Trailers): Any trailer brought onto the property must park down under the carport. There is no way to safely maneuver, turn around, or drive a trailer up to the top section of the property.
On-Site Vehicle Parking: Vehicles without trailers can drive past the carport and park up top. Our setup is perfect for trucks, SUVs, ATVs/UTVs, and short to mid-length open utility trailers only.
On-Site Constraints: NO tall enclosed trailers or extra-long rigs are permitted anywhere in our driveway or carport. There is simply not enough clearance or turning radius to safely manage them.
Long Trailers (20+ feet): If you are towing a long trailer, it cannot fit up at the house or under the carport. Guests have successfully parked longer trailers down in the neighborhood or arranged space with nearby neighbors, but any off-site neighborhood parking is done strictly at your own discretion and risk.
Electronic Keypad Entry: Hassle-free, contactless check-in. A unique digital code will be generated for your stay—no physical keys to lose out on the trail.
Smart Climate Control: Equipped with an Ecobee Wi-Fi thermostat to ensure the house is perfectly crisp in the summer and warm on chilly mountain nights.
Exterior Security Cameras: Full peace of mind for your trail gear, bikes, and vehicles. We have outdoor security cameras monitoring the driveway, parking areas, and main entryways (absolutely no cameras inside the home or facing private guest spaces).
Motion-Activated Yard Lights: Bright outdoor floodlights activate automatically at dark, making late-night arrivals and gear-unloading safe and simple.
High-Speed Wi-Fi: Dependable wireless internet throughout the home for downloading trail maps, streaming your favorite shows, or using Wi-Fi calling (some cell service can be intermittent in the mountains, but Wi-Fi calling works perfectly here).
Smart TV: Relax after a long day of riding with our living room Smart TV, fully ready for you to log into your personal streaming accounts.
In-Unit Laundry: Full-sized washer and dryer with complimentary detergent provided. Tackle the trail mud immediately so you can pack light!
